Do you know Jumo?
Whether you pronounce it ‘Hoo-Mo’ or ‘Joo-Mo’ doesn’t matter – so long as you know what it is.
Jumo, a Yoruban word that translates to mean “together in concert”, is the name of a new social networking site that’s set to launch by the end of this month (November 2010). Designed by one of the co-creators of Facebook (also the young man behind Obama’s social media campaign for presidency), Chris Hughes, it seems it can only be destined for success and rabid support.
It’s a sign of the times (and impressive) when a site that hasn’t even launched yet already has a Facebook following of more than 14,000 people and almost 6,000 followers on Twitter. You can learn more about the upcoming launch and the vision behind the site from Chris himself in this video.
As a marketing agency that works with several nonprofit organizations, it is something we plan to keep on our radar and are excited to join in and see if it really does as the temporary home page claims and “connect people who want to change the world”. In a world of abounding options and noise, it may prove to be a clean and collective portal for sharing ideas and inspiration. And in a world of ‘doom and gloom’-filled-news reports, it’s promising and encouraging to know that there are others in the world who strive to focus on what we can do to make a difference. Jumo will bring us together, right on our desktop.
P.S. – It’s pronounced /JU-mo/.
